How does the assessment process work?
The assessment process follows a stepped approach designed to ensure that any assessment is appropriate, necessary, and based on a clear understanding of your situation.
All patients seeking clinical assessment begin with a Foundation Assessment. This allows us to explore your experiences in detail before deciding whether further diagnostic assessment is required.
This approach is important because not everyone benefits from proceeding directly to a full diagnostic assessment. In some cases, going straight to full assessment can lead to unnecessary time, cost, or complexity if there is not enough information to support it.
The stepped model is designed to:
· Ensure that assessment is appropriate to your situation
· Avoid unnecessary diagnostic processes
· Reduce avoidable time and cost
· Allow decisions to be made based on understanding rather than assumption
In some cases, the Foundation Assessment may identify alternative explanations, highlight different support needs, or indicate that further assessment is not required. This is efficient because you only pay for what you use.
If further assessment is appropriate, we will explain what this involves and outline your options so you can decide how to proceed. At each stage, you remain in control of whether you continue.
You can take time between stages if needed, and there is no expectation to move forward unless you feel it is appropriate to do so.
What is the first step?
The first step for clinical assessment is a Foundation Assessment.
This is a one-hour appointment and forms part of a comprehensive assessment process.
Can I choose how far to continue?
Yes — you can decide whether to continue at each stage.
There is no obligation to continue beyond the Foundation Assessment.
What happens if I don’t continue?
You can stop at any stage.
We will still provide findings and recommendations based on what has been completed.
How should I prepare for my appointment?
We will let you know in advance if there is anything you need to complete or provide before your appointment.
This may include background information, questionnaires or relevant history that will help us build a clearer understanding of your situation.
Providing this information in advance can help ensure that your appointment is used effectively and that any assessment is based on accurate and comprehensive information.
Will I need to complete forms or questionnaires
If forms or questionnaires are required, we will explain this clearly before your appointment and provide guidance on how to complete them.
These are used to support the assessment process and provide additional context, but they do not replace the discussion that takes place during your appointment.
Taking the time to fill these saves time in the tie with us that you've paid for.
Will anyone else need to provide information?
In most cases, additional information from someone who knows you is necessary, particularly in relation to your childhood, however we recognise that this is not possible and in such cases not having someone to provide information wouldn't prevent us working with you. This can take longer.
This information may include input about your early development, behaviour in different settings, or how your experiences present over time.
What happens after I book an assessment?
Once you have booked an appointment, you will receive confirmation along with details on how to access it.
We will also provide information about what to expect and let you know if there is anything you need to prepare in advance.
What is QbCheck?
QbCheck is a computer-based tool that can help measure areas such as attention, activity and impulsivity.
It provides objective data that may support the assessment process, but it does not diagnose ADHD on its own and is not required for everyone.
If it may be helpful in your assessment, we will explain why it is being used, how it contributes to the overall process, and any associated cost before proceeding.
How long does the full process take?
This varies depending on individual circumstances.
Some people complete assessment within a relatively short period, while others may take longer depending on complexity, scheduling and how much information is required.
It is normal for the process to vary between individuals, and this flexibility is part of ensuring that the assessment is appropriate to your needs.
This means there is no standard timeline you are expected to follow, and the process is designed to adapt to your needs rather than requiring you to fit a fixed timeframe.
How do you protect my privacy?
Our clinic is regulated by the Care Quality Commission who have clear standards that any health and social care provider must meet. We use "Semble" as our records system and they are continually working to ensure that the highest standards of data security are maintained.
